This is a friendly public service announcement from your friends here at Yerba. California voters passed Proposition 64 (56.85% Yes), which immediately legalized various possession of cannabis by adults over the age of 21. However, Prop 64 did not immediately legalize the sale of cannabis products to adults 21 years of age and older, and the purchase of recreational cannabis will not be legal until California regulators establish the operating and licensure procedures.
Prop 64 gives California policymakers until January 1st of 2018 to make licensing available, meaning that recreational sales will likely be unavailable until that point. In the past, other states to legalize adult use and possession of marijuana have had to establish an interim system that allowed adults without a cannabis recommendation to purchase from medical retailers. There are no guarantees that this solution will be enacted in California, which is why this statement is in bold and italics: you still need a valid medical cannabis recommendation to purchase cannabis in California.
To repeat: you still need a valid medical cannabis recommendation to purchase cannabis in California. You can get your cannabis recommendation in 30 minutes through our friends at HelloMD. It’s only $39 with the Yerba discount!
Prop 64 Takes Immediate Effect, Except When It Comes to Recreational Sales
On November 9th, the day after the election, folks all over California took to the phones to find a location to purchase newly-legalized cannabis. Most everyone was shocked to hear that while cannabis is legal to possess, there is still no legal market for adults without a recommendation to purchase marijuana. Unfortunately, misinformation is a pretty common symptom within the cannabis community, and there will always be hiccups when implementing cannabis laws.
Many people did not renew their cannabis cards because they were under the impression that Prop 64 would make medical recommendation obsolete. This is certainly not the case, as all legal cannabis sales in California will continue to require a valid medical recommendation until interim laws are instituted (which is by no means guaranteed). If you need to renew your cannabis recommendation, make sure to check out Yerba’s fantastic partnership with HelloMD!
